Axion Power’s battery energy storage system integrated into PJM utility grid
Axion Power International Inc.’s battery energy storage and battery system, PowerCube, is being integrated as a power resource for the PJM Regulation Market, which serves 58 million people in all or parts of 13 states and theDistrict of Columbia.
The use of PowerCube on the PJM market marks the first time an external energy storage system has been integrated into a major power grid. Axion Power, in a partnership with Viridity Energy, will initially participate in the PJM market as a 100 kW resource that will soon be ramped to higher kW levels. Viridity Energy will be managing the Axion PowerCube, a highly mobile and scalable 500kw/250kw Battery Energy Storage System.
CEA launches Smart Grid interface standards committee
The Consumer Electronics Association has launched a new Smart Grid committee to advance standardization of the Modular Communications Interface specification. The new standard will benefit manufacturers, utilities, service providers and consumers as it leads to more Smart Grid-ready products.
The MCI specification, created by the Universal Smart Network Access Port Alliance and based on research from the Electric Power Research Institute, will enable manufacturers of consumer products to build Smart Grid-ready products that can obtain energy information from digital meters and energy system interfaces regardless of the communication technology used.
ABB installing electric-vehicle fast chargers at BP service stations
As part of a nationwide trial, ABB has started installing multiple fast-charging systems for electric vehicles at some BP service stations in theNetherlands. ABB recently deployed the first two direct current Terra systems in the central city ofUtrecht. Another charger will be installed at a BP service station inRotterdamin December, with two more to follow at locations to be identified early next year.
ABB will install two types of Terra chargers to meet the specific capacity requirements at the various BP locations. The multi-port Terra Base Station 100.2 can charge up to two cars simultaneously and is ideal for locations that are expected to see an increase in electric-vehicle traffic over the next few years. The Terra 51 is a single-port charger designed for locations with regular traffic.
