Google invests $75 million in Iowa Wind Farm

In its effort to encourage development of green energy, Google is investing $75 million in a wind farm located in Green County, Iowa. Google now has a stake in Rippey Wind Farm located 130 miles northeast of Council City Bluffs, Iowa, which is home to one of Google’s massive data centers.

Though, Google’s Iowa data center won’t be getting power from the wind farm, the high electricity demands of their data centers is one of the reasons why the company continues to invest in green energy.
To date, Google has invested over $990 million in renewable energy.

Veterans finds new jobs in clean technology

When military veterans search for jobs, they often want more than a paycheck. They look for work that gives them the same kind of connection to mission and vision that they are accustomed to, work that has a high sense of purpose.

It is a good thing that there are companies that gives veterans such an opportunity.

About 10 percent of Palo Alto-based Tesla Motors’ workforce of 3000 employees and 20 percent of roughly 800 workers of Topaz Solar Farm in San Luis Obispo County are veterans and military hires.

On top of the technical, mechanical and electrical skills that they already possess, the need for doing rewarding work makes veterans a perfect fit in the cleantech economy.

Financial support signals Upswing in Global Solar Energy development

Due to strong financial support, the future looks bright for solar projects.

In California, solar developer 8minutenergy Renewables announced that they have successfully achieved financing support for the construction of the largest solar farm in the world, capable of producing 800 megawatts to power 65,000 homes.

Further down the globe, South Africa and Peru also acquired financial support for their multi-million dollar solar projects.

These global initiatives are proving that solar is not just a way to provide clean energy, but also an effective way to create jobs and spur economic growth.

Kenya set to replace Hydro with Geothermal and Solar

With the construction of a new 560-megawatt geothermal power plant, Kenya Electric Generating Co. (KenGen) announced that in two years time, they will be able to reduce hydropower’s share of total output to less than half.

Kenya has an installed electricity capacity of 1,600 megawatts, 82% of which is produced by KenGen.
KenGen also plans to begin building its first solar power plant next year, which should produce as much as 150 megawatts.

Aside from geothermal and solar power, the company also has plans to invest in wind power, steps that will give the country more access to green energy.

Tips on Spotting and Responding to Natural Gas Leaks

Since people tend to use their natural gas appliances more often during the winter time, Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) offers tips on how to recognize and safely handle gas leaks.

Signs of a leak include: distinctive odor, unusual hissing sound, dirt or water being blow in the air, damaged connection to a gas appliance, dying vegetation near pipeline areas and exposed pipeline after an earthquake, flood or other disasters.

If a leak is suspected, do not use any device that could cause a spark and do not turn any electrical devices on or off.

Do not attempt to control the leak or repair the damaged area as it is best to evacuate and seek professional assistance immediately.
